Custodial history

The photograph collection came from a variety of sources including individual donations, family donations and internal photographing. Many of the photographs were copied from family albums by photographing the albums and then reproducing the images for various purposes such as publishing and displays.

Scope and content

Series consists of photographs collected by the St. Albert Historical Society and some photographs from St. Albert Historical Society and City of St. Albert events.

Arrangement

The St. Albert Historical Society could have up to three different numbering systems for one photograph and used two filing systems for many of the photographs at different periods of time. Images that were submitted as part of the gathering of information for the creation of Black Robe’s Vision were given a number to correspond with information on the family and/or person. At some point, the photographs were taken out of the Black Robe’s Vision filing system and placed in this photograph collection. The photographs were filed in a four-drawer filing cabinet with a negative produced for each image for the purpose of reproduction, a print and at least one sheet of paper with metadata indicating information about the images. The files were numbered with a P to indicate photographs, yet sometimes one photograph was assigned two differing P numbers at different points of the photograph’s life under the St. Albert Historical Society’s management. The Musée Héritage Museum’s Archives has physically separated the different media, re-numbered the images but maintained the intellectual arrangement as the St. Albert Historical Society last left the photographs.
