History

St. Albert opened its doors to young athletes from across the province in 1979, when the city hosted the Alberta Summer Games on August 2-6. The Games featured "Festival '79", a cultural celebration designed to enhance the Games through the involvement of the cultural community. The Festival ran for 17 days, and included events such as a craft fair and sale, a fiddling competition, a backgammon tournament, plays, street dances, and a seniors' choir festival.

The chairman was Richard Fowler, a former mayor of St. Albert and practicing lawyer. Vice-chairman was Lorne Wood, executive director of the Alberta Schools Athletic Association. Administrative services chair was Bill Gardiner, a vice-president of Standard General Construction. Sports Division chair was Jack Patterson, principal of Vital Grandin school. Food and Accommodation chair was June Givens, a St. Albert realtor. Culture and Special Events chair was Ken Graham, director of touring, performing arts Alberta Culture. Internal Transportation chair was Ed Savoie, a Bulk Oil dealership employee. Promotions chair was Jerry Manegre, supervisor of public relations for Northwestern Utilities.
